Real Talks #1 stereotyping

The Student Hotel
19h - 21h

RA*W x The Student Hotel

Diverse young talent is the future. But is the future ready for diverse young talent?

Real Talks is a new initiative by RA*W and The Student Hotel to open up the conversation about taboos in the creative industry. Our aim is to inspire young talent, share insights and build a better future together. With different perspectives, more colour, more opinions, more diversity and more openness.

In our first Real Talk we talked about Stereotyping in the creative industry. This digital session was divided in 3 sections, streamed through one channel.

The first speaker was Jamal Jama: Jamal is relatively young but already dealt with stereotyping in his journey to success. Everything he does shows his understanding of the impact of harmful stereotyping and the need for representation. In this inspirational talk he taught us how to tell a story the right way and gave helpful insights about his own way of working at JAMA MEDIA.

Next up was the Panel Discussion, moderated by Dorus van Mosselveld (former RA*W Board Member). We brought the conversation about stereotyping to life with a diverse panel (Jason Steere, Mieke Koopen, Eddy Salfischberger and Cindy Fleur), broadcasted live during this session. We talked about the industry, creative work and why stereotyping is so stubborn. The discussion provided us with plenty of perspectives and gave us insights on how to truly move forward together.

The second speaker was Chee-Han Kartosen-Wong, she’s equipped to make the difference. She is fighting for an inclusive world on many different fronts. With her ultimate goal being to put an end to stereotyping. She gave some hands-on tips & tricks tos prevent stereotyping in your future career. In this way we can all play our part in making our industry better.

All proceeds of this event went to the newly initiated Plus Plus One Academy to introduce, accelerate and provide access to young students of colour to the creative industry.
